As promised in last week’s UBC real estate blog regarding area events in October I am following up with information for my area residents (and soon to be residents) about Halloween. The Point Grey region is all about community and seasonal affairs such as the one that lands this coming 31^st are a big deal, being celebrated before the day even arrives. I will be attending as many of them as possible, to mingle with some of the households I have helped place within the community in addition to having some bone chilling fun myself as I seek out both humorous and haunted takes on Halloween.

Halloween Events near UBC and Point Grey

1. Growloween Trick or Treating @ Point Grey Village (Oct 26, 12 PM - 2 PM)

 

On the Saturday before the 31^st (to accommodate the young ones who can’t be out late on a week night) over 35 merchants will be doling out Halloween candy along West 10th avenue between Discovery Street and Tolmie.  However the neighborhood knows that for many households doggies are a part of the family too and thus the aptly named affair “Growloween” also includes treats for costumed pet pups which starts with a visit to Three Dog Bakery at 4548 West 10^th avenue. A street packed full of kids and dogs decked out in zombie costumes will be cute and creepy at the same time and serves as a definite “must see” this Halloween.

2. Halloween Carnival @ West Point Grey Community Center (Oct 26, 10 AM – 12 PM)

 

This midday affair is perfect for early risers looking to celebrate Halloween with the little ones a little early. Dress your tots up as their favorite character and head on over to the West Point Grey Community Center for Halloween crafts, games, a haunted house, and a bewitching bouncy castle.

3. Murder Mystery @ Aberthau Mansion (Oct 27, 5 PM – 8 PM)

 

West Point Grey Community Center’s Aberthau Mansion offers the perfect setting for a unsettlingly fun Murder Mystery. Ages 16+ will be in attendance for early tea at 5PM when a gunshot will ring out, indicating that a "murder" has indeed taken place. At that moment you and fellow guests become immersed in solving the crime – perhaps becoming victims yourselves? For more information please visit www.westpointgrey.org.

4. Halloween Spectacular - UBC Symphony Orchestra @ Chan Shun Concert Hall (Oct 31, 8 PM)

 

Looking for something a little classier this Halloween? The UBC School of Music and Symphony Orchestra is putting on a classical affair this Halloween, presenting the likes of Schubert and Mussorgsky. However, don’t worry about any pretension creeping in and ruining the fun, attendees are encouraged to come in full Halloween garb. Zombie in a tuxedo anyone? 5. Old Fashioned Neighborhood Trick or Treating

 

The best way to celebrate Halloween in the UBC Point Grey area is to do so the old fashioned way. Get the kids, and yourselves, costumed up in creepy or creative attire and roam our quaint neighborhoods where decorated homes line the lamp lit streets, offering chocolaty and candied treats to stave of mischievous tricksters. The days of shopping mall afternoon trick or treating may be taking over many metropolises but the UBC area has kept the true community spirit alive on Halloween, bringing neighbors together with door to door greetings. Be sure to join them this Halloween and get to know everyone living within the same relative postal code.
