Getting fit in the summer is easy. With the often balmy Vancouver months of July and August residents take to the shores, sea walls, trails, and city parks to partake in their favorite form of outdoor exercise on the weekends and week days alike. It doesn't feel like effort when the natural backdrop is so amazing. However when autumn creeps in many of us let the regime slip somewhat, trading bike seats for the comforts of movie theater chairs and coffee shop plush while the rain drips down the window panes outside. Sure we tend to get our rears in gear again with the passing of the new year but if we wait until our resolutions kick-in we end up spending time chasing something that we already had and let go, a fruitless endeavor, no?
Before I digress too much I want to note that as the community's UBC Realtor I look out for the interests of my past, present, and prospective UBC real estate clients. I use this blog to provide readers with valuable information about the area that spans far beyond property taxes and mortgage rates. The purpose of this week's blog post, if I haven't made it obvious enough yet above, is to provide those that plan on making the UBC area a longterm home with a few recommendations to staying fit, and having fun, in the fall in and around the UBC community. Let's get continue on the path that the summer set us on today and let the rest play catch up after Ryan Seacrest drops the ball on Times Square.
Fun Fall Fitness Activities in the UBC Area
Stand-Up-Paddle or Kayak @ Jericho - Don't think that since the summer is over that all fitness activities need to take place outside of the water. Us UBC'ers are relentless in our endeavor to squeeze every last recreational drop out of the great waterfront before us and sunny autumn days allow us to do so. In the late days of September and through October the ocean conditions are still prime while the crowds have dropped considerably. All you need is a wetsuit and a will to get out the and paddle. Visit Ecomarine for lessons and rental information.
The Stairs of Wreck - UBC can lay claim to one of the best beaches for getting a workout in Greater Vancouver yet many are too shy to use the natural "stair master" that leads to and from Wreck Beach in the summer. Why? Because it is Vancouver's only clothing optional beach. However when the autumn chill arrives many UBC area residents celebrate the opportunity to enjoy Wreck Beach when its regulars take their au-naturale lifestyle indoors. Whether casually hiking or looking for a grueling staircase to get your workout the staircase at Wreck will burn and tone better than any elliptical.
Get Aquatic Indoors @ UBC - OK, I know its autumn and many of your prefer to get for indoors so how does a heated indoor pool sound? The UBC Aquatic Center offers programming for both youth and adults (you don't need to be a student) thanks to UBC Recreation. Water fit activities include casual drop-in swimming, aqua fitness classes, and swimming lessons. For more information visit UBC Recreation.
Get Sent to Bootcamp, by Choice - UBC Recreation also offers the general public access to their Coop Combo Boot Camp. Some of us need a trainer to get us in gear (and get results, fast!) and what better way than through the bootcamp experience? This class combines the use of fitness balls and boards to improve our core, stability, and functional strength. For more information visit UBC Recreation.
I hope these recommendations inspired you to get out there and enjoy the UBC area community while getting fit in the process this fine fall season. As usual, should you have any inquiries about UBC real estate please feel free to contact my UBC Realtor office anytime.
