A local triathlon is on my list of things to do. Honest. But you see I’ve been so busy working hard to find the perfect home for the multitude of individuals and families arriving in the UBC area that I simply have not had the time to adequately train for such a thing. If it wasn’t for my duty to the community, I would most certainly be competing in the up and coming UBC Triathlon. It’s an honest excuse, right?

OK, so you may not be buying into my procrastination of competing in this annual endurance event but I could not maintain my blog this month without mentioning one of BC’s largest and longest-running triathlons which takes place right here within one of the most scenic courses of its kind in the province.

The UBC Triathlon offers a variety of official distances which include Olympic, Sprint, and Short - I suppose I have no excuse for not competing after all. There is also a Duathlon, a Relay, and an Aquathlon for the kids (I really have no excuse). This is one triathlon that offers something for everyone and can very well spark one’s desire to one day compete in the likes of the world famous Challenge (Okanagan) or even IronMan Canada – possibly earning a birth into the World Championships in Kona Hawaii every October.

While registration is now closed for this UBC Triathlon which takes place this coming Sunday March 9 (you are encouraged to come on by and cheer on the triathletes), the event also serves as the gateway to get our area residents into gear this spring and onto a path of fitness that may very well lead to their inclusion into the very same event next year. Even if you have no such “official” aspirations you likely intend on getting more fit as the summer approaches. Why not train as if you are about to compete in the likes of the above mentioned event? Of course you should do so at a pace that is comfortable for you and your current level of health. I can tell you this, there is no better community to do it in that right here in the UBC area.

I conclude today’s blog post with some suggestions of where you and/or your party can get out there and enjoy casual triathlon-like training in the local community of UBC this spring/summer:

  • Spanish Banks to Jericho – This is the best pathway in Greater Vancouver for jogging and biking. No matter the time of the year you can enjoy this scenic path to work up a sweat without it feeling like an intense workout (unless of course you thrive off of that feeling). In the summer your trifecta of endurance can be made complete by jumping in the Pacific for a lap or two parallel to the shores of Spanish Banks, Lacarno, and/or Jericho Beach.
  • Wreck Beach Stairmaster – The stairs of Wreck Beach are famous/infamous for giving climbers’ thighs, hamstrings, and glutes a serious workout. You can also throw summer swimming into the equation along the beach found at the base of the steps – although those with a shy personality may want to cover their eyes en route to the water (you’ll see why – if you look).
  • UBC Recreational Facilities – UBC has the best recreational amenities in the entire province, if not country, especially if you are counting scenery into the consideration. With everything from an Aquatic Center and Boathouse to an expansive outdoor track & field at Thunderbird Park UBC students and residents alike are given a head start towards their triathlon dreams, official or personal in nature. UBC offers the perfect community landscape for all things fitness and the simple act of owning a home in UBC practically makes you healthier by default – not a soul can resist the lure of the active amenities available to all that live here. If you have happened to find this article while searching for a home in UBC please do contact my real estate office today – as soon as possible, before my lofty ambitions to start training for next year’s UBC Triathlon kick in.
